They had chicken.

That is the detail Ravi keeps returning to, four years on, and he has stopped being embarrassed about it. Of all the things his memory could have kept from the eleventh of March, it kept the chicken — that his father had made it with too much salt, and had known, and had put the dish down with the particular defiance of a man who was not going to be told.

His mother had said, "It's fine."

"It's salty."

"It's fine, Bhaskar."

"You don't have to eat it."
