The Funeral of a Man I Disliked

I did not like Bhekizizwe and I went anyway, and my wife asked me on the drive why, and I could not answer her until somewhere past Estcourt.

He had cheated my father over a fence line in 1994. Not a fortune — a strip of ground about the width of this room, and thirty years of the two of them not greeting each other at the shop.

I inherited the not-greeting the way you inherit a jacket. I have never examined it.
