The Kitchen in August
It was a Tuesday and nothing was happening, which is the only reason Tom noticed it.
Half past eight in the evening, August, all the doors open because the flat had held the heat. Maya was at the table doing something to a bicycle wheel with a spoke key and swearing quietly. The radio was on and neither of them was listening to it. He was cutting up a mango badly, the way he always did, producing more mess than fruit.
And somewhere between one slice and the next it arrived — the full, unmistakable ache of missing something.
