The rule was that he made the tea.
Not because she couldn't. She had made tea for a decade before him and would presumably make tea for whatever years came after, and she made it, if anyone were honest, marginally better. The rule existed because at some point in year one she had said, in a voice of enormous theatrical suffering, I simply cannot, and he had got up, and she had watched him get up, and something had been established that neither of them ever revisited.
Twenty-two years. He made the tea.
